James 1:1-4 KJVR

1 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting. My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.

What a command James gives to us! When trials, troubles, and tribulations come; rejoice! Have joy in the Lord, because you know that being faithful works patience and that when patience has its full work we are made complete in Christ. We lack nothing and become mature in His Spirit and His way.

The key is patience. The Greek word is a compound word. The two words are submerge or go under and stay. What James is telling us is that when these trials are upon us – as they are for all mankind – we must submerge ourselves in Jesus. We dive deep into the waters of the Holy Spirit and stay there. The deeper we go, the less the storms of life can touch us just as the storms on the oceans of this world can not disturb the deeps. We rejoice in that we have a hiding place. We rejoice that we are driven closer to Him by the storms of life. We rejoice knowing that when the storm is over, if we have been faithful to remain submerged in Him that we will be made whole and mature, transformed into His image!

The storms of life may blow, but we have a promise that brings the hope of a better tomorrow into the presence of a troubled day.

Stay submerged! It may not be easy, but it is well worth it!

11  But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.  12  Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.  13  I give thee charge in the sight of God, who quickeneth all things, and before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession;

1) A Man of God is marked by what he flees from (v11).
Those who consent not to wholesome words and to the doctrine according to Godliness
The love of money
2) A Man of God is marked by what he follows after (v11).

Deuteronomy 4:1 Now therefore hearken, O Israel, unto the statutes and unto the judgments, which I teach you, for to do them, that ye may live, …

In my studies recently, I ran across a word that captured my attention and began to delve into it.

The word “statute” is defined in English as A law enacted by the executive of a government. It is permanent in nature and synonymous with “law.”

That is a good definition and in this use very accurate, but when I began to look at the ancient Hebrew pictograms I found a deeper underlying principle.

The word is made up of two pictures: a wall and the sun touching the horizon.

The wall is symbolic of that which separates.

The sun touching the horizon is symbolic of that which brings unity or togetherness.

The moral nature of God is both that which separates and that which brings together.

Jesus, when asked what the greatest commandment or law was, replied to love God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength. He also stated that the second is like the first and that was to love your neighbor as yourself.

The absolute love of God is the wall that separates us.

It separates us from anything which would displease Him. It separates us from anything which would steal us from Him. It separates us from anything contrary to His Holy nature. Our love for Him drives us from the things of this world, and is a protecting wall that keeps sin our of our lives.

The mirror of our love of God is that love for our neighbor.

It is this love for our neighbor that binds us together.

It is also this love that causes us to reach out to those in sin who are strangers and to pull them into the Walls of Gods love that they may become neighbors, friends, brethren, and fellow citizens of the heavenly kingdom.

It is little wonder that Paul was adamant in telling us to saturate ourselves with His Holy Word. Only the Statutes of God can keep us together and hold the sinful world at bay!
